Belgrade Dance Festival 2012

Announcing its 9th edition, from March 28 to April 12, 2012, Belgrade Dance Festival presents fifteen top dance productions, authors and performers who sell full houses months ahead. After many decades of absence, Serbia today has a great position on world’s dance map, because the most interesting international dance works are presented in Belgrade every April.  Good tradition had huge impact on forming of local audience, understanding and appreciation of dance in our country and region, but also foundation of high artistic standards.

 

Berlin dance magazine BalletTanz describes Belgrade's dance event as „the most referent crossing of current dance work“, which is also a definition of program that we will see in April 2012. If you add names such as Sylvie Guillem, Akram Khan, Alexander Ekman, Hofesh Shechter, Yossi Berg, Emanuel Gat, Paul Lightfoot, Crystal Pite...you’ll be sure that big dance is waiting for us.

Get to know Belgrade...

 

Belgrade is the most beautiful when you try to get to know its hidden stories. In the morning we will start to discover Belgrade from totally different perspective – from sky, from its rivers and folklore life. First we will visit Avala Tower and see Belgrade surroundings from the sky. It is currently the tallest structure in Serbia and in the Balkan region. It represents real pride of Belgraders. It was destroyed in NATO bombardment of Serbia on the 29th of April 1999. The tower was officially reopened at a ceremony attended by the highest state officials on 21 April 2010. Now, it is Belgrade’s significant symbol. From the Avala Tower we will be amazed by the view that spreads all around central Serbia. After Avala Tower visit we will introduce Belgrade Rivers – the Sava and the Danube River. We will have unique Belgrade boat ride and enjoy lunch on a boat. In the afternoon we will visit Zemun, old part of Belgrade where the Opera Madlenianum is placed. The Zemun Fortress is the oldest building in Zemun, mentioned as early as the 9th century. The current remains are from the 15th century. The impressive Millenium Tower stands at the centre of the fortification. It was built up by the Hungarian authorities in 1896 and was renewed in 1962. 

 

Belgrade is the city to enjoy and the city of much diversity. It proudly lies on the confluence of its most famous rivers - The Danube River and The Sava River. The capitol of Serbia is also favorite place for young people, always ready to discover something new and unique. This is a place where you can find traces of history, very rich cultural life and the sign of the future time. In the morning we go for the popular Belgrade sightseeing which simply couldn’t be imagined without In visit one of the biggest Orthodox Church - Saint Sava Temple. It represents the most monumental building in the city. Afterwards, our walk continues to the most important Belgrade symbols - mighty Belgrade Fortress, Kalemegdan Park, Victor Monument and beautiful confluence of the two rivers that spreads from the top of the Belgrade Fortress. We will walk through the main street in Belgrade –Knez Mihajlova Street, the place for shopping and enjoy Belgrade everyday life on The Republic Square.

The building of the National Theater is one of the most beautiful in Belgrade, located in the center of the city. The building was modeled after the general type of theatre facilities of the time, particularly the building of the Milan Scala, borrowing its renaissance conception and decorative finish. It was the place where the Great Constitutional Assembly voted in the famous 1888 Constitution. Take a look magnificent interior of this well known building.

 

A visit to the museums of Belgrade represents a walk through entire epochs, providing a view of the rise of a city and its transformation through time and circumstance.The Ethnographic Museum houses a large number of ethnographic items, divided into separate exhibits (household items, jewellery, customs, national costumes, national architecture, economy, stock farming, transportation, cultural artefacts), along with one of the best equipped professional libraries in the Balkans.

 

The Residence of Princess Ljubica was built on orders by Prince Miloš Obrenović in 1831, as the private residence of his wife, the Princess Ljubica. The architecture and placement of rooms represent an example of the Balkans style, with a number of western baroque elements.

 

The Museum of Theatre Arts exhibit contains archive materials and documents, letters, manuscripts, posters and programs, photographs, set and costume sketches, a library and a hermotheque (newspaper clippings).

 

The Gallery of Frescoes was founded in 1953 as a special institution for the collection, study and exhibition of material on Serbian medieval art. It contains a rich collection of copies of frescoes and medieval sculpture.

NOVI SAD & PALIĆ LAKE

 

After breakfast in the morning we will continue to north part of Serbia and visit the most important locations of Vojvodina plain. First we will visit Novi Sad – the capitol of Vojvodina and the second largest city in Serbia. The city is located on the banks of the Danube River, facing the northern slopes of Fruška Gora Mountain. It is established in 17th century. Novi Sad is the city of monuments. You will see the wonderful Petrovaradin Fortress – the symbol of the city, Liberty Square, City Center, beautiful streets and parks. People from Novi Sad are easy-going and they all have one special philosophy of eating, drinking and living in the slow lane. Afterwards we continue to Majkin Salaš to have lunch. Salaš (farmstead) is the perfect places to visit in Vojvodina. They are located on a property outside of a village and usually include a house and accessory buildings, stables, sheds etc. Majkin Salaš is one of the most popular near Palić Lake. Here we will taste delicious homemade food and enjoy in traditional surroundings. After lunch we will walk down the banks of Palić Lake – the unique natural environment. In the evening we will go back to Belgrade. 

 

 

SREMSKI KARLOVCI & FRUŠKA GORA NATIONAL PARK

 

In Sremski Karlovci- a small town museum, we will visit The First Serbian Grammar School, The Chapel of Peace and The Treasury of Patriarchal Palace. Considering that Sremski Karlovci is also famous by the culture of growing grapes, we will have wine tasting in one of the cellars. Afterwards we will proceed to Fruška Gora National Park – the natural miracle of the Vojvodina plain. This natural park next to the divine nature hides many Orthodox Monasteries (around 15 monasteries). We will visit some of these monasteries and get to know Serbian religious life better. In the afternoon we will have organized lunch in one of the salaš in Fruška Gora. Like every other region in Serbia, Fruška Gora also has delicious food which we will have a chance to taste. 

 

OPLENAC

 

Oplenac– the center of the Serbian Royal Family. This complex is consisted of the endowment of King Petar I which contains the church of St.Đorđe, King Petar’s house, new openedGallery (The house of vinogradar) and Karađorđe’s fortified town. All this represents the unique monument of the cultural-historical heritage of the Serbian people. 

 

SREMSKI KARLOVCI & NOVI SAD

 

In the morning we will have one day excursion to Sremski Karlovci and Novi Sad. LEPENSKI VIR & VIMINACIUM 

 

Lepenski Vir is very important Mesolithic archaeological site located in Serbia. It consists of one large settlement with around ten satellite villages. The evidence suggests the first human presence in the locality around 7000 BC with the culture reaching its peak between 5300 BC and 4800 BC. Numerous piscine sculptures and peculiar architecture are testimony to a rich social and religious life led by the inhabitants and the high cultural level of these early Europeans. Today it represents one of the most important archeological sites in Europe. After visiting Lepenski Vir we will continue to Viminacium, another archeological miracle situated near Danube River. On the way we will have free time for lunch. Viminacium used to be a Military camp of the Roman province. Thanks to his extraordinary geographic position, the economics was developed, and its citizens enjoyed wealth. In Viminacium you will find mausoleum, temples, thermal baths, the north gate of the military camp, an aqueduct and recently discovered Roman pantheon and amphitheater, one of the biggest on Balkan Peninsula. In the evening we will go back to Belgrade.

 

SMEDEREVO & OPLENAC

 

Smederevo is a city and municipality in Serbia, on the right bank of the Danube. Only a few Serbian towns were built like Smederevo was. Contrary to the towns which arose from the villages and other settlements, the Despot Đurađ Branković built Smederevo with the intention to be the capital of Serbia. In Smederevo we will visit Smederevo Fortress and Town Museum. Afterwards we will continue to Oplenac. On the way we will have free time for lunch or we will visit local wine cellar for wine tasting and lunch. Oplenac is the centar of the Serbian Royal Family. This complex is consisted of the endowment of King Petar I which contains the church of St. Đorđe, King Petar’s house, new opened Gallery (The house of vinogradar) and Karađorđe’s fortified town. All this represents the unique monument of the cultural-historical heritage of the Serbian people. 

 

 

KOVAČICA & DELIBLATSKA PEŠČARA

 

Kovačica is home to a school of naive art which has garnered fans across the world. It takes roughly 50 km north of Belgrade. Kovačica visit will definitely take you back to another age. Some homes are still painted in a traditional light blue and many of the women are dressed in colorful, long flowing woolen skirts with headscarves.At other times, the works of Kovačica’s painters are collected and exhibited in the Gallery of Naive Art. This gallery was founded in 1955 and it was the first gallery of naive art in the country. After visiting Kovačica village we will continue to Deliblatska peščara (Deliblato Sand) – is one of the largest sandy terrains in Europe.  On the way we will have free time for lunch. It is situated in Vojvodina plain. It used to be a part of prehistoric desert. It is originated from the withdrawal of the Panonian Sea. Regarding the forest and unique surroundings, it was proclaimed to be the Special Nature Reserve. In the afternoon we will return to Belgrade. 

 

 

MANASIJA, RAVANICA MONASTERIES & RESAVSKA CAVE

 

Manasija Monastery is very significant Serbian Orthodox Monastery. It is situated near Despotovac, just a few kilometers from the E-75 highway.The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and it is one of the most significant monuments of medieval Serbian culture. It belongs to the "Morava school". The monastery is surrounded by massive walls and towers. Afterwards we will continue to Ravanica Monastery, situated around 20 kilometers from Manasija Monastery. This monasterywas built between 1375 and 1377 and it is the endowment of the famous Prince Lazar. Prince Lazar was buried in Ravanica Monastery after his death in the Kosovo battle. Since then, Ravanica Monastery has been a pilgrim's destination and an important center of cultural activities and the Serbian people's assemblies. In the afternoon we will free time for lunch and continue to Resavska Cave - which lies in the eastern Serbia in the vicinity of the town of Despotovac. This is the first cave to be prepared for visits in Serbia and it is very rich in cave ornaments of various shapes and colors. It represents one of the most important attractions in this part of Serbia. In the evening we will go back to Belgrade. 

 

 

 

OVČAR KABLAR GORGE

 

Ovčar Kablar Gorge is one of the most beautiful regions in Serbia.It is the pearl of nature, so rich in unique creations of diligent builders... And the most valuable and breathtakingly beautiful and memorable ever has been created by the nature itself. The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge is known as the Serbian Holy Mountain of Athos thanks to numerous monasteries situated in this area. First we will visit Blagoveštenje Monastery – situated here. It is one of the most important monasteries in this Holly Mountain. After visiting this monastery we will free time for lunch and afterwards we have a boat ride to Nikolje Monastery – also one of the pearls of Serbian Religious life in the Gorge. This way we will have the opportunity to observe the beauty of this Gorge.  In the afternoon we will have transfer to Belgrade.
